Question and Answers

  1. We require the purchaser to obtain a hull survey from an independent, qualified Marine Surveyor of their choice that is associated with an Association such as the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) or Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS). This person will tell you the integrity of the hull, including moisture content, and will also check over the rest of the vessel.

  2. You should also have a compression test taken on the engine (s) and/or generator to make sure that the rings and valves are holding proper compression. Hour meters are nice to look at, but never tell you the entire history of the engine.

  3. An I/O pressure test should be taken to be sure that the seals and gaskets are in good condition and not leaking.

  4. Last, but probably most important - A proper, satisfactory water demo, checking all systems, electronics, full R.P.M., oil pressure, temperature, all other guages, and to make sure vessel responds and handles to your satisfaction.

  5. There are many well qualified classes available to a new boat owner and their families, and in some cases should be attended by present boat owners.
    1. U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
    2. U.S. Power Squadron
    3. Ohio Division of Watercraft

  6. Operators licenses are not required by law to operate a pleasure craft, however, if you are operating commercially, a U.S. Coast Guard license is required and in some cases a State of Ohio license may also be required, as well as inspections.

  7. Boat owners should arrange to have a courtesy inspection performed on their boat every season by one of the agencies in paragraph #5.
